A city between Europe and Asia
The Bosphorus separates the city's two shores. Its heritage reflects the Byzantine and Ottoman empires alongside contemporary Turkish life. Istanbul's historic areas are on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
Organising the route
A walk through Sultanahmet connects Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and the surroundings of Topkapi. Give markets, neighbourhood streets and Bosphorus views their own part of the itinerary, rather than treating the trip as a sequence of isolated landmarks.
Before setting out
- Decide whether history, architecture, food or local life matters most to you.
- Check monument access arrangements and mosque prayer times.
- Group visits by area and allow room for traffic, queues and breaks.
